Energy-Efficient Fluorescent Bulbs

The newest generation of fluorescent light bulbs can save you plenty on electric bills. Here’s why.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs are up to 75 percent more efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs and will last 10 times as long.

Unlike old-fashioned overhead fluorescents, these new fluorescent bulbs screw into lamps and other fixtures just like incandescent bulbs and deliver a warm, soft light. (Some fluorescent bulbs are larger than incandescents, so be sure to check the size of your fixture before you buy your bulbs.)

Even though the purchase price of fluorescent bulbs is higher than that of incandescent bulbs, you don’t have to replace them nearly as often—so they pay for themselves fast.

In addition to saving you money, fluorescent lighting is good for the environment. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing just one incandescent bulb with a fluorescent bulb means 1,000 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide are emitted into the atmosphere.
