broadband over power lines (bpl)

Broadband over power lines (BPL) continues to be a topic of interest within the customer base of electric utilities because it has the capability of being a possible alternative to DSL and cable modem internet services.

After several pilots, it has been determined that BPL is a viable solution to those customers living in metropolitan areas.  However, there are real hurdles that must be overcome before the service can be made available to widespread rural areas. BPL signals originate at the electric utility substation where access to a broadband portal (i.e. T1 line) is required. This type of access simply does not exist in rural areas where substations are located, just as the service is not available for the rural home owner.

WCEC is interested and closely watching the development of BPL and as with any new technology we expect many advances will be made so that rural areas may one day benefit from it.

In the meantime, WildBlue or Texas Cellnet internet services may be alternate options to consider.
